إن العمود الفِقَري عبارة عن عمود مكون من عدة عظام (فقراتٍ) تربطها العضلاتُ والأوتارُ والأربطةُ ببعضها، وتبطنها أقراصٌ تمتص الصدمات. وجود مشكلة في أي جزء من عمودكَ الفقري قد يسبِّب آلام الظهر. يُمثِّل ألم الظهر أمرًا مزعجًا لبعض الأشخاص. بينما يراه آخرون ألمٌ مريرٌ لا يُحتمل.

وعادة ما يختفي ألم الظهر من تلقاء نفسه خلال ستة أسابيع، حتى وإن كان ألمًا حادًّا. وعادةً لا يتطلب علاج ألم الظهر إجراء عملياتٍ جراحيةٍ إلا إذا لم يكن تناول الأدوية الأخرى فعالًا.
