Research

Mayo Clinic doctors and researchers in gastrointestinal cancer research and gastroenterology and hepatology research are studying new ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating colon cancer.

Colon cancer research is conducted in coordination with the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center receives funding from the National Cancer Institute and is designated as a comprehensive cancer center — recognition for an institution's scientific excellence and multidisciplinary resources focused on cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Mayo Clinic also maintains a Colon Cancer Family Registry as part of an international research consortium studying the genetic and molecular epidemiology of colorectal cancer. A central goal of the Colon Cancer Family Registry is the translation of colorectal cancer research to the clinical and prevention settings for the benefit of registry participants and the general public.
